Music has a huge power. It can persuade you, soothe you, irritate you, touch your emotions, impetus you, and makes you feel relaxed. Today the demand for digital music has increased. Hence, rock music has occupied a significant place in our lives. Rock music is everywhere from TV channels, radio stations, videos, DVDs cars and home stereos. It relies heavily on technology and originates in anger revolt. This contemporary music has been extremely popular especially among youngsters. Its beat appeals to the energy and enthusiasm of youngsters and covenant youth.

Rock music makes us happy, melancholic, afraid, annoyed, drives us crazy. It plays an important role in heightening our emotional life that results as a social outlet for emotional release. It also helps in the betterment of our personality by stress reduction and self realization.

The history of rock music goes back to thousands years. It was used in demonic cults and religions. The dominant part of this music was its heavy beats. Today, rock music is all about funk, rebellion and rock ‘n’ roll. It blends with variety of music so well that it hardly emerges as rock music. Rock music has different categories, such as jazz rock, blues rock, soft rock, country rock, southern rock, folk rock, hard rock, ethno rock, techno rock, acid rock, psychedelic rock, punk rock and funk rock. So it has something to offer for everyone. The blend of rock music with other forms was not attained as it developed, however; its beginning goes back to 1950s. During 1930’s and 40’s, a hybrid band “Rhythm and blues” was taken up by white musicians such as Bill Haley and Elvis Presley.

Rock music was initially seen as dance music. The true originator of the rock and roll was Chuck Berry in 1955. For the first time black man was playing black music and also was getting appreciation from white kids. The music industry then realized the true potential of black music in white market. Rock and roll was an overnight success. The music industry suddenly started endorsing white idols such as Elvis Presley. For youngsters, the black rockers and a few white rockers music was the reflection of their rebellious mood. Unfortunately their careers were short lived, but their impact was long lasting.

Today two new genres of rock music have emerged; rap and alternative. In the late 1950s and 60s the history of rap music was created by the music of Otis Redding, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Solomon Burke. It was a mixture of gospel, rock, country, jazz and folk. In the 80s two different styles came into sight; hip hop and gansta rap. Another significant genre emerged in the 70s was Alternative rock is born because of the commercialization of rock music. Don’t get surprised that our present generation is attracting towards rock music.
